Overview

The CMOS-MEA chip is based on complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology, facilitating fast, high-resolution monitoring of electrical activity. With more than 4,000 recording sites, each of them sampled at 25 kHz, the chip allows extracellular recordings at a very high spatio-temporal resolution. By including amplification on the chip itself, noise is minimized and a high signal quality is guaranteed.

Over 1,000 stimulation sites are included in the chip and the headstage is equipped with a stimulus generator.

Chamber Layouts

The chips are equipped with chambers to house your sample while allowing the use of a microscope. You can choose between chambers optimized for cell culture or large tissue recordings.

For Cultures

CMOS-MEA16/32-CC

A 6 mm diameter round, flat area that is optimized for seeding and evenly growing cells.

For Large Tissues

CMOS-MEA16/32-SCB

A large, rectangular flat area of 8 x 8.5 mm allows the placement of larger tissues like brain slices or retina.
Cutouts in the chamber allow for the setup of basic perfusion.

CMOS-MEA16/32-SCA

A large, rectangular flat area of 8 x 8.5 mm allows the placement of larger tissues like brain slices or retina.
Cutouts in the chamber allow for the setup of advanced perfusion with a laminar flow.

Chip Layout

The CMOS-chip has a 65 x 65 layout and is available with 16 μm or 32 μm interelectrode distance (center to center). The electrode diameter is always 8 μm. Between the recording electrodes, there is a grid of 32 x 32 larger stimulation sites. Summarizing, you can record from 4,225 electrodes and stimulate your sample at 1,024 sites.

The chip is coated with a planar oxide, similar to glass, enhancing the biocompatibility and biostability. Recording and stimulation works purely capacitively, removing any DC offsets by design.
